about

I first started playing with Rashid Ali in 1988 when he came by a gig of mine at a place called Brewesky’s on East 7th Street. He was riding by on his bicycle - his main means of transportation, heard the music from the street, stopped and came in. I was playing with my trio with the late great Wayne Dockery on bass and Tony Moreno on drums. Rashied, a hero of mine, graced us by sitting in. He invited me to call and come by his loft to play anytime. I was there within the week and played with him regularly until his passing. I played in a couple of his bands but mostly we played a lot of duo especially when I completely dropped off the scene for two + years between 93 and 95 to produce a video titled For The Children. In 93 I had written a song about the problems of neglect, violence, substance abuse, teen pregnancy and more that was exploding in and around urban centers in the US. Richie Havens recorded the song for me and with the help of kids from four after school community programs we created an award winning 14 minute video that highlighted how adult intervention and community programs help turn kids lives around. At the time I was completely driven, and didn’t realize how hard it was to make a video. In total it took me four years to complete. Literally the only time I touched my horn then was when I played with Rashied every 5 to10 days or so at all crazy hours of the day. I can honestly say I grew more as a musician and player in those 2 1/2 years then I ever would have practicing music and perfecting my technique.
Anyway, by the time we recorded this CD in 97 or so we had been doing a lot of duos and performing around NYC at I think the Cooler, some New York Spring Jazz Festival, and regularly at the Internet cafe, which I booked for it’s first two years of performances and helped get off the ground. We felt that for our first recording to get some play it would have to be a trio date with bass - drums and saxophone might be a much harder sell. Having both played with Don for years he was definitely the best call. Sadly, literally the week Rashied went into the hospital when he died we had spoken on the phone and decided as soon as he got out we would finally seriously document our duo.
